【Case Study】What Is the Downtime for ONDA Lift? An Explanation of Symptom Progression and How to Spend Your Recovery Period

ONDA Lift is often described as having “almost no downtime,” but many people still find it difficult to picture exactly which symptoms may occur after treatment and how long they may last. How many hours will redness take to fade? Can you go about your usual activities from the next day? Is it suitable before an important event? These are important considerations. However, what you really need to make an informed decision is an understanding of what is happening during the process.
This article explains why the downtime is generally mild, the symptoms that may occur after treatment and the expected recovery timeline, what happens on the day of treatment, and how to spend the days before and after treatment.

What Is ONDA Lift?

What Is ONDA Lift? | LIVELY CLINIC

ONDA Lift is a medical device that uses Coolwaves (2.45 GHz band), a microwave technology developed by DEKA in Italy.
It protects the skin’s surface with cooling while delivering concentrated heat to the subcutaneous fat layer and dermis, aiming to reduce fat and tighten the skin at the same time. Because it is a non-invasive treatment that does not use a scalpel, it can be used on a wide range of areas, including the facial contours and area under the chin, as well as the body, such as the upper arms and abdomen. The ability to address contours and skin firmness without incisions has made it popular among busy people and those who are hesitant about surgery.

Why Is Downtime After ONDA Lift Generally Mild?

The mild downtime associated with ONDA Lift can be explained by its design. In general, many visible reactions such as redness and swelling result from damage to the skin’s surface.
ONDA Lift is designed to cool the handpiece to approximately 5°C to protect the epidermis while heating only the subcutaneous fat layer to around 55–65°C. Most of the treatment energy reaches the deeper fat layer. Because the burden on the skin’s surface is limited, symptoms after treatment are also less likely to occur.
HIFU, which is often used for comparison, uses ultrasound to act on the SMAS layer, whereas ONDA Lift uses microwaves to act on fat and the dermis. This difference may also affect the way pain and downtime appear.

Is “Zero Downtime” Really Possible?

ONDA Lift Case Study (Both Cheeks + Under the Chin)

The phrase “zero downtime” often seen in advertisements deserves a careful interpretation. Here, “zero” refers to a state in which you can apply makeup and go home immediately after treatment and go about your normal activities from the following day, with almost no visible or lifestyle impact.
At the same time, inside the body, fat cells affected by heat are eliminated over several weeks, while collagen regeneration progresses in the dermis. Keep in mind that the visible downtime while waiting for recovery and the internal process until the effects take shape proceed on separate timelines.

Because Heat Is Used, the Risk Is Not Zero

During treatment, most people feel warmth similar to being in a sauna, and severe pain is unlikely. However, because this is a treatment that uses heat, the risk is not eliminated.
Although uncommon, reactions such as blisters, burns, and changes in pigmentation may be reported depending on the energy setting and skin condition. “Little downtime” does not mean “completely harmless.” For this reason, it is essential to tailor the treatment based on skin type and carefully monitor reactions during treatment.

The Treatment Process and Duration of ONDA Lift

Having an idea of what happens on the day of treatment can help you feel more at ease, even if it is your first time. The approximate time from arrival at the clinic to departure is 60–90 minutes, while the treatment itself takes around 15–30 minutes, depending on the area.
After arriving, you will first have a consultation and examination. Once you have reviewed the expected effects, risks, and downtime, the treatment will proceed with your consent after the treatment plan has been finalized. You will then remove your makeup and wash your face before treatment begins. During treatment, heat is delivered while the surface is cooled, so you are more likely to feel warmth than intense heat. Cooling is performed at the end to ease any residual warmth, after which you can touch up your makeup and leave the clinic.
The convenience of being able to go out immediately after treatment is another reason people choose it.

Possible Symptoms and Expected Progression After ONDA Lift

Looking at post-treatment symptoms chronologically can make the recovery process easier to understand. Individual differences occur in all cases, and symptoms vary depending on your skin type, the treatment area, and the energy setting. Please use the following only as a general guide when planning your schedule.

Redness and Warmth (Day of Treatment to the Following Day)

ONDA Lift Facial Case Study | LIVELY CLINIC

The most common reaction is mild redness immediately after treatment and a gentle feeling of warmth in the treated area. In many cases, this settles within a few hours and is barely noticeable by the following day. Light cooling with a chilled pack may help the warmth subside more quickly. Even if you are concerned, makeup can usually be applied to cover it from the day of treatment, so there is generally no need for major concern.

Swelling and Tightness (Day of Treatment to Several Days)

You may experience mild swelling or tightness after treatment around the face, particularly along the facial contours or on the cheeks. This is a reaction that can occur after treatments intended to lift the skin, and it usually subsides naturally within 2–3 days. Unlike the pronounced swelling associated with cosmetic surgery, significant swelling is rare, and in most cases it settles by the following morning to a level that can be adequately covered with makeup. If severe symptoms continue, please consult us rather than pushing yourself.

Bruising (Rare; 1–2 Weeks)

Although quite uncommon, mild bruising may occur in the treated area. Even when it occurs, it is often naturally absorbed within approximately 1–2 weeks and remains at a level that can be concealed with concealer during that time.
However, since the possibility is not zero, it is reassuring to avoid treatment immediately before an important event such as a wedding or photo shoot. Allowing some flexibility in your schedule can also help you feel more at ease on the day.

How to Identify When Symptoms Are Prolonged

The symptoms described above generally settle naturally over time. Conversely, signs requiring attention include persistent severe pain, swelling that does not subside, or changes in skin color. Do not continue waiting based on your own judgment or try to endure the symptoms; consult the clinic where you received treatment as soon as possible.
Recognizing an unexpected course early and responding appropriately may ultimately help you achieve a better understanding of the treatment’s effects.

How Does Downtime Differ Between the Face and Body?

ONDA Lift can be performed on both the face and body, but even with the same device, the way symptoms are perceived may differ slightly depending on the area.
Because the skin around the face is thin and moves with facial expressions, you may notice swelling or a feeling of tightness more easily. However, the symptoms themselves are generally mild and can be easily covered with makeup due to their location. By contrast, on the body, such as the upper arms and abdomen, the treatment area is larger and energy can be applied more readily, so some people may feel warmth or mild tightness for several days. Since these areas are naturally concealed by clothing, they may be easier to manage in terms of visibility.
Taking these differences between areas into account when choosing your treatment date can make it easier to fit treatment around your schedule.

What to Prepare Before ONDA Lift

Preparing to keep downtime as mild as possible begins before the day of treatment. Keeping the following points in mind may help you receive treatment comfortably.

  • Avoid Sunburn and Strong UV Exposure
  • Adjust Alcohol Consumption and Your Schedule on the Day
  • Review Your Skincare Routine

Start preparing what you can in advance.

Illustrated Guide to Points to Check Before ONDA Lift | LIVELY CLINIC

Avoid Sunburn and Strong UV Exposure

Skin that is severely sunburned is more likely to become sensitive to heat and may be more prone to problems such as hyperpigmentation. Once treatment has been scheduled, avoid sun exposure immediately beforehand and continue your usual UV protection with a parasol and sunscreen.
Skin may be particularly sensitive during summer or after leisure activities, so it is safer to improve your skin condition before treatment. If you are aware that you have been sunburned, tell us honestly during your consultation, as this will help us determine whether treatment is appropriate.

Adjust Alcohol Consumption and Your Schedule on the Day

Alcohol dilates blood vessels and increases blood flow, which may intensify or prolong redness and swelling after treatment. It is advisable to avoid alcohol on the day of treatment.
Also, taking into account the possibility of rare bruising, it is reassuring to avoid scheduling treatment immediately before an important event and to allow some flexibility. During periods when you have many parties or events, review your schedule before deciding on your appointment date.

Review Your Skincare Routine

Strong skincare products such as retinol and Peeling may make the skin more sensitive before and after treatment. If you are currently using these products, tell us during your consultation and confirm when you should stop using them.
Stopping everything suddenly based on your own judgment may instead destabilize the skin. Follow your doctor’s instructions when deciding what to continue and what to pause.

How to Spend Your Time After Treatment | A Guide by Activity

Some activities after treatment may prolong redness and swelling. The basic principle is simple: especially on the day of treatment, avoid activities that suddenly increase blood circulation. Understanding the reason makes it easier to see why these activities should be avoided. We explain this in three sections.

Illustrated Guide to Proper Aftercare Following ONDA Lift | LIVELY CLINIC

Makeup and Facial Cleansing

Makeup and facial cleansing are generally possible from the day of treatment. However, skin reactions vary from person to person, so perform both gently without rubbing.
UV protection is also important. The skin may be temporarily sensitive due to the effects of heat after treatment, and exposure to strong light may increase the risk of spots and hyperpigmentation. For reassurance, combine sunscreen with a hat or parasol to physically block the light as well.

Alcohol and Exercise

Alcohol and strenuous exercise can both excessively increase blood flow and may prolong redness and warmth. Keep both to a minimum on the day of treatment. The same principle applies to bathing: limit yourself to a shower on the day of treatment, and avoid activities that strongly warm the body, such as soaking in a bathtub, using a sauna, or taking a hot stone bath, until the following day or later. Treating the day as an opportunity to rest may help recovery progress more smoothly.

Self-Massage

Self-massage of the treated area may sometimes be recommended to promote the elimination of waste products. However, this should not be performed forcefully based on your own judgment. The appropriate pressure and timing vary depending on the treatment, so always follow the instructions of your doctor or nurse. Vigorous massage performed with good intentions may instead irritate the area and prolong symptoms.

What You Can Do to Keep Downtime Short

The practical points for keeping downtime short can be broadly summarized into two areas.
First, avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, long baths, and other activities that suddenly increase blood circulation, especially on the day of treatment. Second, treat sensitized skin gently without rubbing or overheating it.
Another point that is often overlooked is how you choose the treatment date itself. Simply scheduling treatment with a few days of leeway rather than immediately before an event or photo shoot can make a major difference to your peace of mind. Since individual constitution also affects symptoms, if you know that you are prone to swelling or bruising, share this with us during your consultation. Telling us in advance also makes it easier to take this into account when planning the energy level and treatment area.

How to Think About Combining ONDA Lift with Other Treatments

One appeal of ONDA Lift is that it can be combined with other treatments to address multiple concerns, including excess fat, sagging, and skin quality at the same time. However, care is needed regarding the order and intervals between treatments. Let’s review the criteria to consider when combining treatments.

Differences from HIFU and Recommended Intervals

ONDA Lift uses microwaves to act on fat and the dermis, while HIFU uses ultrasound to act on the SMAS layer. Because they reach different layers, they may be combined to address fullness caused by fat and skin lifting as separate treatment goals.
However, both treatments use heat. Whether they should be performed on the same day or scheduled separately with an interval depends on the condition of your skin. Rather than trying to do everything at once, plan treatments according to the concerns you wish to prioritize.

Combining ONDA Lift with Botox

For those seeking a slimmer-looking face, masseter Botox and ONDA Lift are considered a compatible combination because they work in different ways. However, the order of treatment is important. If both are performed on the same day, the basic approach is to perform ONDA Lift first and then inject Botox, in order to avoid heat causing the botulinum toxin to spread or undergo changes.
Conversely, if Botox is administered first, leave an interval of at least one week, or approximately two weeks if possible, to allow the medication to stabilize. The treatment to prioritize depends on your goals, so it is advisable to discuss your desired outcome with your doctor in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions About ONDA Lift

Here are some frequently asked questions from the perspective of downtime when considering treatment. Please check the items that interest you.

Is It Okay to Meet People the Day After Treatment?

In many cases, redness settles by the following day and can be covered with makeup. However, because bruising may rarely occur, it is best to avoid treatment immediately before an important event that cannot be postponed. Choosing a treatment date with a few days of leeway may help you feel more at ease.

Can I Feel the Effects Immediately After Treatment?

Some people feel a slight tightening sensation immediately after treatment due to collagen contraction caused by heat. On the other hand, changes resulting from the treatment’s effect on fat cells and collagen regeneration may gradually appear over several weeks for some people. Rather than expecting immediate results, it may be reassuring to observe the changes carefully over time.

Is There Anything I Can Do to Reduce Swelling More Quickly?

There is no special trick. The basics are important: avoid activities that suddenly increase blood circulation and treat your skin gently. If swelling concerns you, drinking water regularly and maintaining good sleep habits may also help. Avoid self-directed care such as vigorous massage, as it may instead irritate the skin.

I Am Worried About Pain. Is It Related to Downtime?

Because the skin’s surface is cooled during treatment, many people can undergo it while feeling only warmth. Heat may feel somewhat stronger in areas where the skin is thin, but this treatment is not generally associated with severe pain that persists for a long time. Please do not hesitate to discuss any concerns during your consultation.

Does Treatment on the Body Have the Same Downtime as Treatment on the Face?

The types of symptoms that may occur are similar on the face and body, but some people may feel warmth or tightness for slightly longer because body areas are larger. Nevertheless, many treated areas can be concealed by clothing, so the impact on daily life is limited. For reassurance, confirm the expected timeline for each area during your consultation.

Summary

ONDA Lift is a treatment in which the surface is protected by cooling while the deeper layers are treated, so symptoms such as redness and swelling tend to be relatively mild. However, the symptoms that occur and the pace of recovery differ from person to person depending on skin type, the condition of sagging, and the treatment area. It may be reassuring to have your skin examined and discuss questions such as, “How long will it take for my skin to settle?” and “How should I schedule treatment around my plans?”
